סְבָאִים n. pl. gent. SₑbāÕ’im, LXX οἱ Σαβαειμ, A Σεβωειμ;—אַנְשֵׁי מִדָּה וּס׳ Is 45:14 (+ כּוּשׁ, ‖מִחְֹרַיִם, cf. 43:3 supr.); this perh. intended also by Ez 23:42 Qr (v. סָבָא), perh. confounding it with שְׁבָא, cf. SyrVer.

סִבָּה n. f. turn of affairs;—only abs. הָֽיְתָה סִבָּה מַעִם י׳ 1 K 12:15 it was a turn (an ordering) from י׳ (= נְסִבָּה q. v., in ‖ 2 Ch 10:15).

1. a. pl. surrounding places, מְסִבֵּי יְרוּשׁ׳ 2 K 23:5 places round about Jerus. b. as adv. מֵסַב round about 1 K 6:29; fpl. מְסִבּוֹת on all sides, in all directions, Jb 37:12 (of cloud Di < of lightning Bu Du).

Qr = נֶחַה, Hexapla σελ but cf. הֶָרָה Ew:554 Kö:ii. 1, 539; LXX Sym Theod διάΨαλμα, expl. Suidas μέλους ἐναλλαγή; Theodoret Hippolytus μέλους μεταβολή (cf. Hexapla Hb 3:3 μεταβολὴ διαΨάλματος; Syr. Hexapla Aq. עוניתא in 5 PsalmPsalm, Field in Ps 38:12); LXX adds διάΨαλμα e.g. 2:2, 34:11, 94:15, after final editing of Heb. D. ; Aq. gives ἀεί (Theod. also Ps 9:17) ; Sexta διαπαντός (except 20:4 εἰς τέλος); Quinta εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας Jer. semper, Targum usu. לעלמא, לעלמין; but 39:6 לחיי עלמא, 44:9 לעלמי עלמין, 48:9 עד עלמי עלמין, 49:14 לעלמא דאתי; uniform tradition best expl. by closing contents of the Benedictions, מהעולם ועד העולם. So Jer. classes sela with amen and salom; and Jacob of Edessa in Bar Hebr. 10:1 cp. Christian Amen of the people after Gloria);—this interpr. agrees with usage: 71 t. in 39 PsalmPsalm, 3 t. These editors found it in earlier Psalters. Davidic Psalter uses 20 of them, so few in proportion that it is not characteristic of this Psalter; but Korahite 9 (out of 12), and Asaph 7 + 80:8 [LXX] (prob. 8 out of 12); appar. it came into use in time of these editors. In Diretor's Psalter musical terms are added to 19 of the 28 it uses (and only to ten others, of which some could hardly use סלה); PsalmPsalm with סלה all (except 61, 81) name the kind of Psalm in title: 3 מִכְתָּם, 7 מַשְׂכִּיל, 10 שִׁיר, 26 (27) others מִזְמוֹר, Hb 3 תְּפִלָּה; ס׳ is esp. frequent with שִׁיר and מַשְׂכִּיל, terms associated with musical rendering. It prob. came into use in late Persian period in connexion with PsalmPsalm used with musical accompaniment in public worship, to indicate place of benedictions. It was not added by later editors to other psalms; but was revived in first century B.C., and continued in use for some time (v. Jacob: ZAW xvi (1896), 129 f. Br:JBL 1809 EGBriggs:AM. J. Sem. Lang. Oct. 1899, 1 ff.).

1. covering, cover, הָהָר בְּס׳ 1 S 25:20 under cover of the mt., concealed by it; of clouds as covering for י׳ (shutting out his view) Jb 22:14, of darkness (i.e. dark clouds) as י׳'s hiding-place (in theoph.) Ps 18:12 (= 2 S 22:12 v. supr.), so רַָעַם ס׳ 81:8 hiding-place of thunder; of adulterer פָּנִים ס׳ יָשִׂים Jb 24:15 i.e. disguiseth himself.

סִתְרָה n. f. shelter, protection, יְהִי עֲלֵיכֶם ס׳ Dt 32:38 (rd. perh. יהיו, cf. Dr) let them (the strange gods) be over you as a shelter.

סְתוּר n. pr. m. a spy, from Asher;—Nu 13:13, LXX Σαθουρ, LXXL Θασουρ.

סִתְרִי n. pr. m. a Levite;—Ex 6:22, LXX Σεγρει, A Σεθρει, LXXL Σετρι.

מִסְתּוֹר n.[m.] place of shelter; abs. מִסְתּוֹר מִזֶּרֶם Is 4:6 (fig. of י׳'s protection; cf. סֵתֶר Is 32:2).

מִסְתָּר n.[m.] secret place, hiding place;—abs. מ׳ Ps 10:9, Hb 3:14; usu. pl. מִסְתָּרִים Je 13:17 + 6 t.; sf. מִסְתָּרָיו Je 49:10; —

1. secret place(s), concealed from view, Je 13:17; where treasures are stored Is 45:3.

2. hiding-place(s): a. for protection Je 23:24, 49:10. b. for perpetration of crime, esp. murder: Ps 10:8 (‖מַאֲרָב), sim. of lion v:9, 17:12, cf. Hb 3:14; Ps 64:5; of י׳ lying in wait La 3:10 (as a lion).

מַסְתֵּר n.[m.] hiding, act of hiding;—cstr. וּכְמַסְתֵּר פָּנִים מִמֶּנּוּ Is 53:3 and like a hiding of face from him i.e. like one before whom the face is hidden (e.g. a leper, cf. Che:Hpt).
